About Nikki Sewell LCSW, LMSW

Ann Arbor therapist Nikki Sewell LCSW LLC

Well Hello, again!

Before studying for my Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) at University of Michigan, I earned a B.A. in Spanish, lived aboard in Tegucigalpa, Honduras for a time and traveled around Central America. Belize and El Salvador are the only Central American countries I’ve yet to visit.

While I don’t offer therapy in Spanish, I’m conversationally fluent in Spanish making native speakers feel more comfortable. A lover of languages, after all speaking is the way we connect, I’m currently learning Portuguese.

Migrating to Connecticut for a fellowship at Yale University shortly after graduating with my MSW, I became licensed as an LCSW in the state of Connecticut in 2009. I became licensed as an LMSW in Michigan in 2022 prior to a Spring 2023 move back to my home state! Oh how I’ve missed the Mitten, and Ann Arbor.

Our journeys rarely follow the exact course we set for ourselves and mine has been no different. Having lost my father and my husband by the time I was 30 years old has made me no stranger to grief. These losses have shaped who I am today and how I see the world. When I tell you it’s possible to rise from the ashes of your own seismic life events, I know it’s true.

While sharing my story stops here - after all this work is about you, not me - I do approach my work from a fusion of personal experience and professional expertise developed over the past 17 years. You’ll rarely hear me tell you what you “should“ do, but rest assured that I’ll always offer sound advice and guidance.

My approach to Therapy

In Ann Arbor, MI

Collaborative Expertise

We’re both experts, you’re the expert of your own life, and having 17+ years as a therapist, mental health care is my expertise. You’re in the driver’s seat of your care and I’m right next you you with a map and compass, when you need some navigation.

capacity for growth

My therapeutic philosophy is informed by a firm belief that humans are resilient and adaptable, that we can make meaning out of the most difficult life experiences, and that we all have the capacity to grow in the face of the worst life has to offer.

curiosity & exploration

Humans are fascinating creatures. While our primal urge is to avoid all things painful, this doesn’t appreciate our strength, our capacity to overcome obstacles and to maintain hope in our darkest moments. Let’s explore this together. You will surprise yourself.

Privacy & Confidentiality

I know it seems redundant for a therapist to say that. But I want you to know that I value your privacy as much as I value my own. Every element of my practice - from email, calling, and text, to online therapy platform, and payment processor, ensures your privacy is protected.
